What Is Breast Sagging?

Breast sagging, or breast ptosis, is when the breasts droop or fall below their normal placement. Excess or stretched out breast skin will cause the breasts to appear low on the chest. The nipples and areolas may point downward, and the breasts themselves may have sagged so much that they have changed shape or become elongated. Sagging breasts may appear pendulous and deflated.

Why Does Breast Sagging Occur?

Breast sagging may occur for any number of reasons. The most common causes are time and gravity, which slowly break down the structural tissues and cause the breasts to stretch and pull downward. This tends to be more pronounced in older women or in women with naturally large breasts. Another common reason that breasts sag is childbearing. Pregnancy and breastfeeding cause the breasts to stretch and swell with milk. After a mother is done nursing, her breasts will lose the surplus volume. This often leads to breast ptosis, especially after multiple pregnancies. Two other common causes of breast sagging are genetics and weight loss.

What Are the Different Degrees of Breast Sagging?

Breast sagging may be mild, moderate, or severe. Grade I ptosis is mild sagging and may be quite subtle. In some women, Grade I ptosis may only be recognizable to a breast surgeon. Grade II ptosis is moderate sagging, in which your nipples may noticeably fall below your breast crease. Grade III ptosis is severe breast sagging, in which your nipples hang three or more centimeters below your breast crease.

How Do I Know If I Need a Breast Lift?

If you have moderate to severe breast sagging, you will likely need a breast lift to correct it. Even mild breast sagging can be corrected with breast lift surgery. Women who have breast sagging due to aging, pregnancy, breastfeeding, or weight loss will need surgery to correct the position, shape, and elevation of their breasts. Other women who may need breast lift surgery have asymmetrical breasts, elongated or pendulous breasts, overstretched areolas, downward pointing nipples, or deflated breasts. Breast lift surgery can restore youthful curves by firming your breasts and improving their shape and position.
