Top Tips for a Faster, Easier Recovery
Recovery from any surgical procedure has the potential to be difficult and lengthy. While every person heals differently, Dr. Doezie recommends a few important tips that will definitely make your recovery as fast and easy as possible.
Maintain Good Nutrition
Most people do not feel like eating much after surgery, but it is very important to fuel your body with the right nutrients during the healing process. Since it is essential to wound healing, protein is one of the most important foods to consume. Chicken, turkey, protein shakes, quinoa, yogurt, and even some dark green vegetables are excellent sources of protein. Foods that are high in vitamin C and zinc, like oranges, can also aid in the healing process. Patients should limit sugar because sugar can lead to fatigue. They should also avoid sports drinks and other products that are high in sodium since sodium will encourage water retention and swelling.
Do Not Smoke
Smoking in the weeks before and after surgery can greatly impact the speed at which you heal. It constricts the blood vessels and works directly against wound healing. It can not only make the recovery process longer, but it can also lead to wound separation, larger scars than you would have had if you did not smoke, and revision surgery to repair the scars.
Get Moving
While patients should avoid heavy lifting and strenuous exercise for about six weeks after surgery, walking is highly encouraged. Walking is one of the best things you can do to increase blood flow and prevent serious complications like pneumonia and deep vein thrombosis. Walking every one to two hours can also prevent constipation and makes an easier transition into more strenuous activities once you are healed.
Follow Your Surgeon’s Instructions
Following instructions seems simple, but many patients disregard them once they are feeling better. The healing process continues for weeks after surgery—inside and out—and whether or not the patient notices. Tearing, bleeding, or infection can occur if the patient skips even the most minor instructions.
